Your garage door springs do most of the heavy lifting, even if you rarely think about them. Whether your door uses torsion springs or extension springs affects how smoothly it opens, how safely it operates, and what happens when a spring fails. What Garage Door Springs Actually Do
Garage doors are heavy. A standard residential garage door can weigh anywhere from 150 to 500 pounds. The opener is not designed to carry that weight by itself.
That is what the springs are for. They counterbalance the door’s weight so the opener can guide the door up and down without being overloaded.
When the door closes, the springs store energy. When the door opens, they release that energy and help lift the door. If the springs are worn, broken, or sized incorrectly, the entire system has to work harder than it should.
How Torsion Springs Work
Torsion springs are mounted horizontally above the garage door opening on a steel shaft. When the door closes, the spring winds up and stores tension. When the door opens, the spring unwinds and transfers lifting force through cables and drums on both sides of the door.
Most modern residential garage doors use torsion springs. Some lighter doors use one spring, while heavier or taller doors may need two.
The spring has to be matched to the door’s weight and height. A spring that works for one garage door may not be safe or effective on another.
How Extension Springs Work
Extension springs are mounted along the horizontal tracks on both sides of the garage door. Instead of winding, they stretch and contract.
When the door closes, the springs stretch under tension. When the door opens, they contract and help pull the door upward.
Extension springs are an older system and are still found in many homes, especially those built before the mid-1990s. They can work well, but they have different safety concerns and maintenance needs than torsion springs.
Key Performance Differences
Torsion springs usually provide smoother and more controlled door movement. Because the force is distributed through the shaft, the lift tends to be more balanced.
Extension springs can work effectively, but the movement may become less even as the springs age or lose tension.
Both systems are commonly rated around 10,000 cycles, though the exact lifespan depends on the spring quality and how often the door is used. High-cycle torsion springs are available and can last much longer, sometimes 25,000 to 50,000 cycles.
Space can also matter. Extension springs require room along the horizontal tracks. Torsion springs sit above the door and are often a cleaner setup for many modern garages.
What Happens When They Break
This is one of the biggest differences between the two systems.
When a torsion spring breaks, it usually stays on the shaft above the door. The door becomes extremely heavy and may not open correctly, but the broken spring itself generally stays contained.
Extension springs are different. When one breaks under tension, it can snap loose and whip across the garage if there is no safety cable running through it.
That is why safety cables are important on extension spring systems. If your garage door has extension springs and you do not see safety cables, have a technician inspect the setup.
Which Spring System Is Better?
For most residential garage doors, torsion springs are the better long-term option. They usually offer smoother operation, better balance, and improved safety when properly installed.
That does not mean every extension spring system has to be replaced immediately. If your current system is working safely and has proper safety cables, it may still be serviceable.
But if your extension springs are due for replacement, it is worth asking about a torsion spring conversion. A technician can inspect your garage door, measure the opening, check available headroom, and explain whether conversion makes sense.
When to Call for Service
Call for service if your garage door is suddenly heavy, crooked, noisy, jerky, or will not open correctly. A loud bang from the garage is also a common sign that a spring has broken.
Do not keep using the opener if the spring system is failing. The opener can burn out or suffer additional damage when it tries to lift a door without proper spring support.
